Facing Reality Checks: A Call for Preparedness

In times of social, economic, and political upheaval, a quote from the book ‘Hold Your Form,’ comes to mind; “Fighting fire with fire always leaves a pile of ashes.” We live in a period where preparation is essential, and resilience is increasingly required to navigate a complex landscape of evolving challenges. For many, this may mean leaning into difficult truths about systemic issues, inequality, and the need for more collective responsibility.

Significant Developments

In less than a week, several critical events have highlighted shifts in political and social currents across the United States:

– **The Wisconsin Supreme Court** will deliberate on the reimplementation of a law from the 1800s. Though ostensibly related to abortion, this law could have profound implications for women’s rights in general, underscoring ongoing battles over autonomy.

– **In Tulsa, Oklahoma** a woman faced violence, allegedly due to her choice to support a particular candidate. This incident reflects the troubling polarization in American society, where political allegiance can lead to harm.

– **In Texas**supporters of a high-profile political figure are grappling with the fallout of halted bonuses due to tariffs, many of whom have relied on these financial perks for decades. The immediate economic impact has also led to layoffs in various sectors, signaling financial volatility that many are unprepared for.

These events paint a stark picture, especially for working-class and impoverished Americans, who are increasingly facing abrupt reality checks.

Hard Truths and Historical Repetition

Many Americans are no strangers to hardship. However, there’s a particular frustration in revisiting struggles previously thought to be overcome. For those who fall outside mainstream demographics—women, people of color, and the economically disadvantaged—the past echoes loudly. As a Black woman, I understand the sting of “invisible rights” and the pain of navigating systems not designed for people like me. The persistence of inequality can make moving forward feel like a Sisyphean task. Those not familiar with this struggle may be tempted to give up.

Please do not. Progress takes time, and regardless of the speed of technology, human behavior and the removal or lessening of established bias, conscious or not, is neither a ‘click here’ or a ‘drag and drop.’ However, this writing is about awareness and preparation…

The rise of initiatives like Project 2025, which seeks to reshape educational and social welfare policies, has raised concerns. Critics argue that such efforts aim to reinstate outdated and divisive standards, intensifying hardship for those already marginalized. This trend suggests a return to structures that often limit choice, stifle progress, and disregard voices from less privileged communities.

Preparing for an Uncertain Future

If you have the financial means to weather a year or two without steady income, you might be in a position to endure what lies ahead—provided you don’t fall into a category that American society frequently overlooks. However, many are not in that position, and for them, the coming months may demand resilience they’re not accustomed to needing.

Instead of seeking blame, it’s critical to focus energy on understanding the forces shaping these shifts. Movements like PUSH (Protest the Underlying System and Habits), established in 1999, call for recognizing and addressing these fundamental systems that shape our lives.

In the end, our collective success may hinge on our willingness to engage with these realities intentionally and with purpose. This means staying informed, participating in peaceful advocacy, and preparing ourselves—and our communities—for both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
